Hinter dem Pseudonym Emmanuelle Arsan verbirgt sich die aus Thailand stammende Marayat Roullet-Andriane. Im Alter von sechzehn – manche Quellen nennen zwanzig – Jahren heiratete sie den französischen Diplomaten Louis-Jaques Roullet-Andriane, der nach dem Bekanntwerden der Autorin aus Thailand abberufen wurde und den Dienst quittierte. Ihr erster Roman «Emmanuelle oder die Schule der Lust» erschien 1959 in Paris. Trotz der strengen Zensurvorschriften entwickelte sich das Skandalwerk schnell zu einem weltweiten Erfolg: Der französische Underground-Bestseller wurde in zehn Sprachen übersetzt und zog zahlreiche Adaptionen für die Leinwand nach sich.
