Una sera, in una città di un luogo immaginario, un padre si alza da tavola, prende commiato dalla moglie ed esce per andare "laggiù". Ha perso un figlio, anni prima, e "laggiù" è dove il mondo dei vivi confina con la terra dei morti. Non sa dove sta andando, e soprattutto non sa cosa troverà. Lascia che siano le gambe a condurlo, per giorni e notti gira intorno alla sua città e a poco a poco si unisce a lui una variegata serie di personaggi che vivono lo stesso dramma e lo stesso dolore: il Duca signore di quelle terre, una riparatrice di reti da pesca, una levatrice, un ciabattino, un anziano insegnante che risolve problemi di matematica sui muri delle case. E l'uomo a cui è stato affidato l'incarico di scrivere le cronache cittadine. Ciascuno ha la propria storia, chi ha perso il figlio per una grave malattia, chi in un incidente, chi in guerra. Insieme a loro idealmente, visto che non può muoversi dalla sua stanza, c'è anche una strana figura di Centauro, con la parte inferiore del corpo che nel tempo si è trasformata in scrivania. E uno scrittore che da quindici anni vive circondato dagli oggetti del figlio che non c'è più, e il cui unico desiderio da allora è catturare quella morte con le parole. "Non riesco a capire qualcosa finché non la scrivo" dice. È lui a ispirare e a inglobare la storia che stiamo leggendo.
