l volume contiene il testo della terza Lettera Enciclica di Papa Francesco sulla fraternità e l'amicizia sociale che verrà firmata ad Assisi il 3 ottobre 2020. Il titolo trae spunto dallo scritto di San Francesco: «Guardiamo, fratelli tutti, il buon pastore che per salvare le sue pecore sostenne la passione della croce» (Ammonizioni, 6, 1: FF 155) ed è esso stesso uno dei punti focali del magistero di Francesco che già «dalla sera della sua elezione, il 13 marzo 2013, si presenta al mondo con la parola "fratelli". E fratelli sono gli invisibili che abbraccia a Lampedusa, gli immigrati, nella sua prima uscita da Pontefice. Anche Shimon Peres e Abu Mazen che si stringono la mano assieme al Papa nel 2014 sono un esempio di quella fraternità che ha come obiettivo la pace. Fino alla Dichiarazione di Abu Dhabi dell'anno scorso, anche in questo caso un documento sulla "fratellanza umana" che, dirà Francesco, "nasce dalla fede in Dio che è Padre di tutti e Padre della pace"».

A pochi mesi dalla celebrazione della XIV Assemblea generale ordinaria del Sinodo (4-25 ottobre 2015), sul tema "La vocazione e la missione della famiglia nel mondo contemporaneo", e facendo tesoro anche dei frutti della precedente Assemblea straordinaria del Sinodo (5-19 ottobre 2014), sul tema "Le sfide pastorali sulla famiglia nel contesto dell'evangelizzazione", papa Francesco propone alla Chiesa le conclusioni su un tema di grandissima attualità come la famiglia. Il testo dell’Esortazione Apostolica che avremo tra le mani non è un trattato sulla santità, ma una sorta di preziosa lettera scritta da papa Francesco a tutti coloro che vogliano seriamente e concretamente rimettersi in cammino sulla via della santità. Stupisce il modo con il quale il Papa si rivolge ai suoi interlocutori. L’esperienza del perdono che l’indulgenza offre merita di essere ben articolata e compresa per evitare di equivocare l’intero messaggio giubilare.
