The youngest member of the Blaue Reiter movement, Heinrich Campendonk, long remained in the shadow of his fellow artists Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, and Paul Klee. In recent years, he has experienced an extraordinary rediscovery, accompanied by a reevaluation of his extensive oeuvre. In 1921, art historian and publisher Georg Biermann described Campendonk's early work as a symphony of color and rhythm. A few years later, his paintings were denounced as degenerate, leading to his exile in the Netherlands, where he passed away in 1957.
