In «August» (1930) ist die Hauptfigur, die Hamsun erstmals in «Landstrykere» (1927) beschrieben hat, ein Mann Ende 40. Er ist nach wie vor der rastlose, einfallsreiche und initiativreiche Projektmacher. In dem Dorf Polden herrschen gute Zeiten. Ein reicher Heringsfang führt zu Wohlstand. Augusts Begeisterung wirkt ansteckend, und die Poldener verkaufen ihre Felder für Baugrundstücke und kaufen Aktien in Banken und Fabriken. Doch es kommen schlechtere Zeiten. Der Hering bleibt aus, und aufgrund ungünstiger Konjunkturen steigen die Lebensmittelpreise. Augusts Tatendrang hat die Poldener in tiefe Not geführt. Die gesamte Gesellschaft gerät aus dem Gleichgewicht und ist von Hungersnot und Katastrophe bedroht.

About the Author Knut Hamsun (August 4, 1859 - February 19, 1952) was a Norwegian author, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920.
