Giulio Cesare, non riuscendo ad avere la meglio con la forza sugli irriducibili Galli armoricani, decide di costruire una città romana intorno al loro villaggio, per costringerli ad assorbire gli usi e ai costumi di Roma. Incarica del progetto il giovane architetto Angolacutus: questi si incarica di costruire un complesso residenziale di villeggiatura chiamato "Il Regno degli dei". Dopo diversi scontri con i Gallli, Angolacutus riesce infine a costruire il suo edificio, anche grazie al druido Panoramix che, commosso dalla sorte degli schiavi costretti a lavorare al cantiere, persuade i suoi compagni a non ostacolare oltre i lavori. Grazie ad una massiccia campagna pubblicitaria, i primi inquilini iniziano così a giungere al Regno degli dei. La presenza dei Romani e dei loro sesterzi, tuttavia, inizia ben presto ad incrinare il tessuto sociale del villaggio di Asterix e l'equilibrio naturale della foresta. Convinti a ragione che il tutto faccia parte di un astuto piano di Cesare ai loro danni, Asterix e Panoramix decidono allora di intervenire...

Nel 46 a.C., battute le truppe di Pompeo a Munda, Giulio Cesare prende possesso della penisola Iberica. Tuttavia, secondo un copione ben noto al povero condottiero romano, un villaggio di Iberi continua ad opporre strenua resistenza all'invasore, dando filo da torcere alle sue legioni. Per piegarne lo spirito, Cesare rapisce allora Pepe, il giovane figlio del loro capo Salsadipeperon y Monton, e chiede la resa in cambio della vita del bambino.
