This volume is an outcome of the international research project FEMAGE - "Needs for female immigrants and their integration ageing societies" (www.bib-demographie.de/femage) funded by the European Commission in the 6th Framework Programme. The international comparative analysis of citizen's viewpoints towards immigration and integration of foreigners in eight European countries builds around the key questions: Is the presence of foreigners seen as an asset or a challenge? What are the expectations of natives towards immigrants? Which integration policies and measures are favoured? The book provides answers to: who is perceived as foreigner; how are types and numbers of foreigners evaluated; what types of attitudes prevail towards resident foreigners; which social characteristics are associated with those attitudes; and which are the perceived advantages or disadvantages of immigration. The book also addresses the interrelationship between attitudes towards immigration and integration of foreigners and attitudes and preferences concerning future demographic trends, gender relations and family life, elderly, life satisfaction, general value orientations. The findings are parsimoniously compared to the results of other major surveys that addressed migration issues. The concluding chapter summarizes the main results and highlights the policy implications of the overall findings.
