“Safari” means Journey in Kiswahili, and Terri Muvanya-Wischmann shares her travel experiences through Kenya and Germany with humor and seriousness. The first story features a Kenyan journalist who relocates to Germany, hoping to provide her mixed-race son with a brighter future. In Kenya, he is labeled a “coloured” or Mzungu child, but in Germany, he is identified solely as African and Black. This reflects a broader German perception where being German is often equated with looking like native Germans, disregarding mixed heritage or citizenship. The author highlights the identity crisis faced by children of immigrants, who are frequently questioned about their origins and when they will return to their “homeland,” simply because they don’t fit the German mold. Additionally, she confronts the oversimplification of Africa in Germany, where the continent's rich diversity—comprising 53 countries and over 1,000 languages—is often reduced to a single narrative. Africans are stereotyped as uniformly black, with a monolithic culture and cuisine. This work challenges stereotypes surrounding mixed marriages, race, sexual exploitation, integration politics in Germany, and the myth of the “White Gentlemen” in affluent Western Europe.
