Praga, impero austro-ungarico, inizio giugno 1914. Solomon Meisl è un medico ebreo che esercita a Josefstadt, il cuore storico, magico ed esoterico della città. Tenace, intuitivo, paziente, il dottor Meisl affianca alla sua professione quella di detective privato. Così, un giorno d'estate, ecco bussare alla porta del suo studio Karel Heida, un giovane ufficiale dei Lancieri incaricato di fare luce sull'omicidio di una principessa russa. Un caso inspiegabile, a cui fanno seguito altri efferati delitti, dai contorni quasi sovrannaturali. Deciso ad affiancare il tenente Heida nelle sue indagini (e avvalendosi dei consigli di un amico scrittore di nome Franz Kakfa…), Meisl si butta a capofitto nella Praga più occulta e incantata, memore del ghetto ebraico e del Golem, tra nobildonne seducenti, rabbini-alchimisti, cantanti d'opera, cabarettisti yiddish, assassini seriali e terroristi nell'ombra. Alla fine ogni delitto avrà la sua spiegazione, il suo movente, il suo colpevole. Ma intanto, a Sarajevo, il 28 giugno 1914…

In 1939 German-occupied Poland, an American priest and a German officer are brought together by the assassination of Mother Kazimierza, an nun with the gift of prophecy. Father Malecki, a tough Chicagoan, finds himself forced to collaborate with Captain Martin Bora, the young intelligence officer leading the murder investigation. Despite their difference in age, upbringing and beliefs, the men share an idealistic, burning desire for justice. Malecki's fearlessness leads him into dangerous political waters, while Bora's sense of moral outrage is stoked by the genocidal actions of his compatriots. Separated from his attractive, egotistical wife, he is also at risk of losing his self-control to actress Ewa Kowalska and her beautiful daughter Helenka. An intellectual friendship develops between Malecki and Bora. Together, they will eventually not only solve the crime that threatens to cause a revolt in Poland, but also the unexpected, mysterious death of Bora's womanizing roommate. Will Father Malecki's soul-saving mission succeed in a land already bloodied by the Holocaust?

Salò, inverno del 1944. Reduce dall'avventuroso recupero del carteggio Mussolini-Churchill narrato ne "Il morto in piazza", il colonnello Martin Bora si ritrova sulle sponde del lago di Garda come ufficiale di collegamento tra la Wehrmacht e Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso Sociale Italiana. Qui viene subito incaricato da un generale dell'Aviazione di investigare sull'incredibile furto della "Venere di Salò", un preziosissimo dipinto di Tiziano sottratto con troppa facilità dalle sale di una villa requisita dai tedeschi. Mentre Bora inizia ad indagare tra una miriade di personaggi civili e militari, tutti ampiamente sospetti per un motivo o per l'altro, il ritrovamento di tre cadaveri aggiunge una nuova dimensione al mistero: sono tre bellissime donne, apparentemente suicide, ma in realtà assassinate da un'unica mano omicida. Si tratta di un serial killer oppure questi delitti sono intimamente connessi al furto de "La Venere"? Perché l'assassino lancia messaggi cifrati all'investigatore tedesco, quasi invitandolo ad una partita mortale? E per quale motivo le autorità italiane e germaniche si sforzano di far ricadere i sospetti sullo stesso Bora?

October 1944, in the Republic of Salò, a German puppet state in the north of Italy and the last fascist stronghold in the country. Martin Bora must investigate the theft of a painting by Titian. While Bora’s inquiry proceeds among many difficulties, discovering three dead bodies throws an even more sinister light on the scene.

Berlin, July 1944, a few weeks before the attempted assassination of Hitler by Claus von Stauffenberg. Bora is ordered to investigate the murder of a dazzling clairvoyant, a major star since the days of the Weimar Republic, with deep connections to those in power. But there is more at stake: Bora and Stauffenberg inevitably meet.

Afte Stalingrad, Major Martin Bora is still serving on the Russian front as a German counterintelligence officer. Two Russian generals die in German custody. Everything appears to exclude the likelihood of foul play, but Bora begins an investigation.
