A finales de junio de 1905, el escritor guatemalteco Enrique Gómez Carrillo embarca en Marsella con destino a Oriente con el compromiso de enviar crónicas periodísticas a los diarios “El Liberal”, de Madrid, y “La Nación”, de Buenos Aires. Se trataba de narrar el espíritu de la nación victoriosa en la reciente guerra ruso-japonesa. Tras cuatro meses regresa a Francia el 2 de noviembre, habiendo dejado en la prensa unas crónicas que se recogerían en su “Viaje al Oriente”. No obstante, de aquella experiencia saldría algo mucho más importante, éste “El Japón heroico y galante”, publicado en 1912, que se convertiría en una obra fundamental. Se describe aquí no sólo la vida del Japón de principios de siglo, de las calles de Tokio (que aquí todavía se llama Tokío) con sus musmés, su barrio licencioso (nos narra sorprendentemente su visita a una de las casas de prostitución y la contratación de los servicios de una misteriosa oirán) y sus kurumayas que arrastran los coches de alquiler, sino también las más famosas leyendas tradicionales sobre guerras y batallas, sobre amores fatales y destinos heroicos.
