      Mit James Bruce, dem schottischen Landedelmann, beginnt die Epoche der wissenschaftlichen Erkundung Afrikas durch die Europäer. Sein Weg führte ihn vom Roten Meer nach Äthiopien, und als er am 4. November des Jahres 1770 an den Quellen des Blauen Nils stand, hatte er das Ziel erreicht, von dem Cäsar geträumt hatte und das den Königen und ihren Kundschaftern jahrtausendelang verborgen geblieben war.
