Coregonid fishes are vital resources in Central European lakes, which were once oligotrophic but have experienced significant eutrophication over the past two decades. This shift, along with increased fishing intensity, initially led to higher yields; however, it has altered species composition, resulting in catches of lower commercial value. It has been over 15 years since the last specialized meeting on coregonid biology, and this symposium aims to foster exchange and collaboration among countries invested in the future of these fishes. The focus is on addressing shared scientific challenges and exploring commercial exploitation methods that are relevant not only to participants but also to the broader ichthyological community. Presentations will cover current research on the biology and exploitation of coregonid fishes in the Alpine regions, with an emphasis on population dynamics. Additionally, advancements in intensive rearing techniques for coregonid larvae and juveniles will be discussed, highlighting various aspects of fish physiology and biochemistry. This gathering seeks to illustrate the ongoing relevance of coregonid fishes in evolutionary research and promote cooperative efforts to ensure their sustainability.
