Rapid mass movement as a source of climatic evidence for the holocene

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

To evaluate the character and intensity of human impact on the climate system, it is essential to differentiate between natural climate changes and those caused by human activities. This requires analyzing the Postglacial (Holocene) climate history of regions unaffected by human influence alongside those where humans have played a significant role. Such comparisons are effective, provided the overall human impact is not excessively strong. Another approach in this volume involves examining the history, regional patterns, causes, and timing of rapid mass movements across Europe, which provides evidence of both natural and human-induced environmental changes. The aim is to distinguish between spontaneously occurring processes and those triggered by human actions. To assess human influence on the climate since the beginning of the Neolithic period, it is necessary to compare climate developments in areas with minimal versus intensive human utilization. This study focuses on rapid mass movements on slopes, differentiating between natural phenomena and those induced by human activity, emphasizing the type, causes, human influence, regional distribution, and age of events such as debris flows, landslides, and rockfalls throughout Europe.
