Since the publication of the „Catalogue of the Hepaticae of Colombia“ (Gradstein & Hekking, 1979), 164 species have been newly reported, while around 200 species were synonymized, excluded, or renamed. The new catalogue recognizes 840 species across 36 families and 136 genera, comprising 832 species of Hepaticae and 8 of Anthocerotae. Proposed new synonyms include Crossotolejeunea angulata S. Winkler = Cheilolejeunea (subgen. Strepsilejeunea) spec., Metzgeria bialata S. Winkler = Riccardia andina (Spruce) Herz., and Plagiochila guilleminiana Mont. = P. raddiana Lindenb. Colombia boasts a rich hepatic flora, with about 60% of all tropical American species and one-sixth of the world's hepatics found here. The country has more species than all of sub-Saharan Africa and nearly double that of Europe. The highest diversity occurs at elevations of 2000-3000 m, while the lowest is above 4000 m. The Andean region, particularly in Departments Cundinamarca, Risaralda, and Magdalena, has the most species, while the Llanos orientales and Caribbean coastal regions are the least diverse. The lowland rainforests of the Pacific and Amazonia are also underexplored despite the number of hepatic species reported. With substantial lowland rainforests still intact, further exploration in these areas is essential for future research.
