The ferns and fern-allies (Pteridophyta) of the Cape Verde Islands, West-Africa

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This publication revises the 34 known species of ferns and fern-allies from the Cape Verde Islands, based on herbarium material and specimens collected by the senior author during nine excursions, resulting in 29 confirmed taxa. The presence of two species (Asplenium (Ceterach) sp. and A. marinum) could not be verified, bringing the total number of pteridophyte species on the archipelago to 32, with a strong likelihood that the two unconfirmed species never existed there. This work marks the first comprehensive account in 80 years. The phytogeographical analysis indicates that a significant proportion of the species have a worldwide or palaeotropic distribution. Only six taxa (Asplenium aethiopium ssp. braithwaitii, Asplenium hemionitis, Davallia canariensis, Diplazium caudatum, Dryopteris oligodonta, Notholaena maramae ssp. subcordata) show a connection to the neighboring Canary Islands. The study provides valuable insights into the diversity and distribution of pteridophytes in the region, contributing to our understanding of the flora of Cape Verde.
