This volume features articles presented at The Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining Conference IIS: IIPWM'03, held in Zakopane, Poland, from June 2-5, 2003. The conference is part of a series of 12 successful symposia on Intelligent Information Systems organized by the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, focusing on new trends in Artificial Intelligence. The initiative began in 1992 with a small workshop aimed at showcasing research from Polish scientific centers and comparing it with work by Polish scientists in Europe and the USA, along with their international collaborators. This concept proved popular, leading to the evolution of the workshops into regular symposia covering areas such as Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge-Based Systems, and Soft Computing, including Fuzzy and Rough Sets, Bayesian Networks, Neural Networks, and Evolutionary Algorithms. Typically, around 50 papers from researchers in Poland and abroad are presented. This year's conference aims to attract a broader international audience and emphasize the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence, including special calls for contributions on artificial immune systems and search engines.
