The mid-1990s marked the beginning of a dynamic economic and stock market upswing in the U.S., often referred to as the new economy. This concept, which suggests that new technologies will lead to continuous technological progress and economic welfare, has sparked extensive debate in political and scientific circles. Its roots trace back over 30 years to the innovation of digitization, which underpins the production and application of information and communications technologies (ICT). The first microprocessor emerged in the early 1970s, followed by the introduction of personal computers a decade later, and the commercial use of the Internet in the mid-1990s. Given the economic boom in the U.S. during this period, questions arise about the lasting positive effects of the new economy on productivity, both domestically and globally. In response to these developments, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology commissioned RWI, Essen, to investigate the driving forces behind the new economy. This report analyzes trends in the ICT sector and the economic impact of ICT products in Germany compared to the U.S. It also examines the intensity and effects of e-business and the influence of various price measurement methods on productivity, which is crucial for international comparisons of total factor productivity.
