The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany funded a comprehensive stocktaking and evaluation of North Sea research which could serve as a reference for future research. The project "Synthesis and New Concept for North Sea Research (SYCON)" has taken up this task based on a broad synthesis of the present state of knowledge about North Sea research. Part 1 of the "North Sea 2000" edition of the journal Senckenbergiana maritima provides four extensive reviews on North Sea phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos as well as fish and higher trophic levels, which result from the SYCON project and present the state of the art in the different disciplines at the end of the 20th century.
