This analysis explores the paradox of Walter Gropius' Bauhaus building from 1926, which appears functional despite not being so. Functionality cannot be assessed solely from an aesthetic perspective; it also depends on whether functionality is merely a visual suggestion. The study addresses whether the Bauhaus building in Dessau is truly functional or not. The author examines how the perception of purpose is influenced by the viewer's consciousness, impacting the understanding of the Bauhaus building and 1920s architecture as a whole. Additionally, the building's formal appearance presents a challenge, as it features a mix of diverse forms and colors whose origins and intentions can only be understood through critical-synthetic analysis. These varied modes of perception also operate on a content level, transforming the communal aspirations articulated at the Bauhaus into a vivid, sensory image. The author derives insights about the perception and conceptual frameworks of the Bauhaus building through the aesthetic categories of purpose, form, and content. This work significantly contributes to the architectural aesthetics of the 1920s.
