The living conditions of over one billion impoverished individuals in developing countries, coupled with the widening gap between the rich and poor, have driven a significant shift in development policy. Initially focused on stimulating economic growth to enhance living standards for all, the persistence of poverty has led to a more nuanced approach. This evolution is encapsulated in the concept of "pro-poor growth," which gained traction in the late 1990s, particularly with the Millennium Development Goals aiming to halve poverty by 2015. This volume features six papers that explore key issues related to pro-poor growth policies, presented at the 2005 annual meeting of the Research Committee Development Economics. The discussions were enriched by feedback from anonymous referees, and all authors have conducted extensive research in this area, including field studies. Their contributions reflect current developments and ongoing debates about the most effective pro-poor growth strategies. While this volume does not claim to be the most comprehensive, it aims to advance the discourse by presenting recent research findings that emphasize policy relevance and empirical support, making them accessible to a wider audience.
