Verbal play production relies on the intentional manipulation of language, commonly used by native English speakers to achieve communicative goals humorously. In contrast, foreign language learners seldom utilize such strategies. This study focuses on planned English punning, aiming to identify the language skills that advanced foreign language learners lack. Ethnographic data is gathered through a word play production task disguised as a translation, linking play, creative problem-solving, and humor with language skills. The investigation extends beyond typical foreign language research by examining the interconnected concepts of play, creativity, and humor, establishing their relationships in the context of language use, learning, and mediation. It offers terminological solutions that draw from various fields, providing a scientific nomenclature for researchers, educators, and linguists. Additionally, the unexpected performances from both language user groups highlight the creative nature of the translation experiment, with case studies framed by factors that foster or hinder creativity. Four key components of creative language problem-solving are identified, leading to a hypothesis about the similarities and differences between advanced German learners of English and native speakers, as well as the constraints faced by foreign language learners.
