Schwetzingen palace

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This guide explores the stunning summer residence in Schwetzingen, which began as a 14th-century moated castle and was transformed into a Rococo masterpiece in the 18th century under Prince Elector Carl Theodor. Originally built as a castle, the structure underwent numerous changes until the early 18th century when Carl Theodor systematically expanded both the palace and its gardens. He lavishly appointed his quarters and initiated significant construction projects, including the addition of the northern quarter-circle pavilion, which housed the renowned court theatre. A highlight is the "bathhouse," a charming retreat in the gardens that retains its original fittings and furnishings. The last major extension to the palace occurred in 1780. In 1803, the palace and surrounding Palatinate territories were ceded to the Margraves, later Grand Dukes, of Baden, who completed final modifications in Empire style. Since then, the palace has not served as a ruler's residence. Today, visitors to Schwetzingen Palace gain remarkable insight into the princely lifestyle of the Rococo and early Neoclassical periods, experiencing the grandeur and elegance of this historical site.
