The text discusses the integration of heterogeneous computing systems and data resources to create a global computing space, emphasizing a framework that includes theory, conceptual design, and applications, particularly through case studies and industrial solutions. Building on a model from 2003, the initiative sought quality workshop proposals to complement the main conferences with cutting-edge research in Web-based distributed computing. In 2008, ten successful workshops from previous years returned for additional editions, often collaborating with newly emerging workshops. Additionally, three new independent workshops—ISDE, ODIS, and Beyond SAWSDL—were selected and hosted. The workshops fostered productive interactions among participants and had significant overlap with the main conference audiences, enhancing the overall collaborative research environment.
