On the move to meaningful internet systems
    • The 2002 edition in Irvine aimed to foster cross-pollination among missions by featuring renowned keynote speakers, including Sycara, Soley, and Mylopoulos. To encourage broader participation, authors were granted free access to another conference or workshop of their choice. This initiative resulted in a significant increase in submissions, totaling 360 for the three conferences and 170 for the workshops. This surge indicates a measurable success in attracting a diverse array of scientific papers, enabling the program committees to curate a high-quality selection of global research in the relevant fields. Despite the increased submissions, the Program Chairs for the main conferences chose to maintain a similar acceptance rate as in 2002, approving approximately one paper for every four to five submitted. In contrast, the workshops had a higher acceptance rate of about one in two. Consequently, the decision was made to split the proceedings into two volumes, each with distinct titles, and we extend our gratitude to Springer-Verlag for their support in producing these publications. The review process was thorough, with each paper in the main conferences evaluated by at least three referees, ensuring a professional standard throughout.

    • The annotation includes a comprehensive overview of various workshops and conferences from 2005, highlighting key themes and topics. It covers the CoopIS, DOA, and ODBASE conferences, alongside workshops focused on merging agents, web services, and ontologies. Key areas of discussion include security, semantics, context-aware mobile systems, and query techniques. The annotation also addresses grid computing, emphasizing web services, applications, security, and performance enhancement within grid environments. Further, it explores inter-organizational systems, service modeling, choreography, and interoperability of enterprise applications. The Object-Role Modeling workshop focuses on schema management and industry perspectives, while the Ph.D. student symposium provides insights into future directions and applications in data modeling. Additionally, the annotation mentions the IFIP WG 2.12 and WG 12.4 workshop on web semantics, featuring invited papers on trust and regulatory ontologies. It delves into applications of the semantic web, modeling techniques, and the integration of schemata, alongside workshops on geographical information systems, which cover geovisualization, spatial semantics, and algorithms. Lastly, the e-learning workshop discusses ontology technology and its applications in virtual reality.

    • A special mention for 2004 highlights the new Doctoral Symposium Workshop, where three postdoc researchers created an innovative setup to connect PhD students and allow them to submit research proposals for evaluation. A select number of submissions were assessed by a panel of senior experts at the conference, with students presenting their work to a broader audience. Participants enjoyed free access to other parts of the OTM program and paid a significantly reduced fee for the Doctoral Symposium, largely sponsored by other attendees. If deemed successful, the General Chairs aim to expand this model in future OTM conferences to attract more young researchers to the OnTheMove forum. The three main conferences and associated workshops focus on the distributed aspects of modern computing systems and the application pull from the Internet and Semantic Web. DOA 2004 emphasized distributed object infrastructure, ODBASE 2004 concentrated on knowledge bases and formal semantics, while CoopIS 2004 addressed the interaction of these technologies with management issues in networked organizations. These areas naturally overlap, with many submissions exploring their mutual impacts.

    • The text discusses the integration of heterogeneous computing systems and data resources to create a global computing space, emphasizing a framework that includes theory, conceptual design, and applications, particularly through case studies and industrial solutions. Building on a model from 2003, the initiative sought quality workshop proposals to complement the main conferences with cutting-edge research in Web-based distributed computing. Notably, the rise of the Semantic Web has led to new research areas that blend linguistics, information systems technology, and artificial intelligence, including the modeling of regulatory systems. In 2008, ten successful workshops from previous years returned for additional editions, often collaborating with newly emerging workshops. Additionally, three new independent workshops—ISDE, ODIS, and Beyond SAWSDL—were selected and hosted. The workshops fostered productive interactions among participants and had significant overlap with the main conference audiences, enhancing the overall collaborative research environment.
