Social change presents individuals with new demands that differ from their previous experiences. This investigation explores how people navigate these challenges in work and family settings when opportunities for mastery are limited. Theoretical insights and empirical research indicate that when faced with unattainable goals and overwhelming demands, motivational disengagement and self-protective thoughts can lead to better outcomes than persistent goal pursuit. Drawing on research by Jutta Heckhausen and colleagues regarding developmental deadlines, the concept of developmental barriers is introduced to examine socioeconomic conditions that restrict opportunities in certain areas. Mixed-effects methods modeled interactions between individual-level compensatory secondary control and regional opportunity structures based on social indicators of economic prosperity and family support. Findings revealed that disengagement correlated positively with life satisfaction in economically struggling regions with limited family services, while the opposite was true in prosperous, family-friendly areas. Similar trends were noted for self-protection regarding domain-specific life satisfaction, particularly among those engaged in alternative pursuits like civic initiatives.
