The conference proceedings document the "European Colloquium on Production Schools" in Berlin, initiated by the Commissioner for the New Federal States, targeting administrators, multipliers, and researchers mainly from the New Länder. The colloquium addressed a widely acknowledged issue: the transition from school to work for young people has become increasingly challenging. Most European industrial nations now face a significant number of unemployed youth, often lacking prospects. This situation is unacceptable, especially in light of the European Council's Lisbon goals and the European Qualifications Framework. An important response to this challenge is the concept of production schools, which effectively combine work and learning. These schools operate across Europe, providing a convincing solution to the transition dilemma. However, they currently lack legal and financial foundations, as well as binding governmental commitments, a situation that persists throughout Europe, with Denmark and France as exceptions. The proceedings also mark a significant beginning, as the colloquium facilitated the first exchange of ideas among production schools in Europe. It is now crucial to promote and disseminate the concept of production schools across the continent.
