Maggiori informazioni sul libro

Lake of Fire is an exhibition that reexamines the concept of the 'readymade' while exploring the avant-garde. It traces the evolution from early cubistic collages using bus tickets and woven chair seats to the works of dada and Duchamp, such as his bottle rack and urinal. The exhibition also reflects on idealistic constructivist reliefs made from scrap metal and the industrial minimalism that followed. Influenced by Rauschenberg’s innovative art, including his angora goat with a car tire, the exhibition highlights pop art’s blend of commercialism with artistic myth. Curator Mikkel Carl aims to investigate the art historical concepts of ‘readymade’ and ‘appropriation’ through a contemporary lens. Today’s artists engage with this avant-garde legacy, adeptly selecting and recombining elements, which is central to collage and assemblage. Eighteen Danish and international artists explore how to create new meanings from existing ones, focusing on the associations evoked in viewers. Their integration of everyday objects with art historical references reflects a personal artistic approach. The title, inspired by a Nirvana song and a passage from Dante’s The Divine Comedy, symbolizes the intersection of fine art and pop culture, embodying the avant-garde spirit. Participating artists include Amanda Taarup Betz, Mikkel Carl, Ryan Gander, and others.
