Throughout history, revolutions have challenged people to transform society on the basis of freedom, equality, and fraternity. Attempts are still being made to find a path beyond communism and liberal capitalism. Smit argues that individuals can and must take responsibility for developing real freedom in everyday life. He addresses the way rhetoric about equality can be transformed into reality. He looks at ways of liberating work from wage slavery and at the real, rather than the perceived, boundaries of the state, the economy, and voluntary activities.
