The story begins with a stage-coach journey through a dark and silent Sierran landscape, creating a dreamlike atmosphere for the passengers. As they ascend, the environment around them becomes indistinct, with shadowy trees appearing and disappearing. The passengers, lulled into a semi-conscious state by the tranquil surroundings, are jolted awake when the coach suddenly stops. John Hale, one of the passengers, notices something unusual outside, hinting at an impending mystery or encounter as the door opens seemingly on its own.
