Johann Peter Süßmilch (1707-1767) studied medicine, theology, and philosophy, serving as a chaplain in the Prussian army before becoming a preacher in Berlin in 1742. He was elected to the Royal Prussian Academy in 1745 and joined the Berlin High Consistory in 1750. In his influential work, he argues that divine will, rather than chance, guides human development and population growth. He explores various factors affecting this increase, including the impacts of war and disease, fertility causes, and the statistical relationships between genders, mortality, and age. He emphasizes the importance of death registers for understanding population dynamics and advocates for improvements in maintaining records of births, marriages, and deaths, including examples from Germany, England, Italy, and France. Süßmilch's approach, which combines metaphysical concepts with arithmetical and statistical methods, reflects the intellectual currents of his time. His work exemplifies the application of mathematical methods to the humanities, as promoted by Christian Wolff, aiming for results that, while not certain, are highly probable.
