Living Torches in the Soviet Bloc

Politically Motivated Cases of Self-Immolation, 1966-1989

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

Explores cases of self-immolation as political protest against Communist occupation in the Soviet Bloc. This work presents the lives of individuals who chose self-immolation as a radical form of protest against the political oppression of Communist regimes between 1966-1989. More than fifty cases were identified during this period, but the focus is on twenty-one instances where political motivation is evident from historical sources. Many "living torches" emerged in response to the August 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia and the suppression of the Prague Spring. Following Jan Palach's self-immolation in January 1969, a significant wave of similar protests arose not only in Czechoslovakia but also abroad, influencing further acts of self-immolation until the late 1980s. Despite varying conditions across the Soviet Bloc, these acts shared a common rejection of totalitarian rule. They were often drastic responses from Czechs, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Poles who opposed the enforced Communist regime and Soviet military presence. Many sacrificed their lives to awaken others from indifference and resignation. Even decades later, these shocking acts provoke reflection on fundamental questions of human existence.
