La traviata è un'opera in tre atti di Giuseppe Verdi, basata su un libretto di Francesco Maria Piave, ispirato alla pièce di Alexandre Dumas (figlio) La signora delle camelie. Fa parte della "trilogia popolare" insieme a Il trovatore e Rigoletto. Composta in parte nella villa degli editori Ricordi a Cadenabbia, sul lago di Como, debuttò al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia il 6 marzo 1853, ma inizialmente fallì a causa di interpreti inadeguati e della delicatezza del tema. Ripresa l'anno successivo con un cast migliore, ottenne finalmente il successo meritato. A causa delle critiche alla società borghese, l'opera subì modifiche dalla censura in vari teatri italiani, con alcuni brani alterati e un cambiamento dell'ambientazione dal XIX al XVIII secolo. Francesco Maria Piave, nato a Murano nel 1810, fu un librettista e scrittore italiano. Proveniente da una famiglia benestante, iniziò una carriera ecclesiastica che interruppe per dedicarsi al teatro. Divenne direttore degli spettacoli al Teatro La Fenice nel 1842 e collaborò con il Teatro alla Scala, scrivendo dieci libretti per Verdi. Giuseppe Verdi, nato nel 1813 a Roncole di Busseto, proveniva da una famiglia di agricoltori e rivenditori. La sua carriera musicale lo portò a diventare uno dei compositori più celebri della storia dell'opera. Morì a Milano nel 1901.
