Questo secondo volume del trittico dedicato da Julian Budden alle opere di Giuseppe Verdi segue l'evoluzione dello stile del compositore a partire dalla crisi del periodo post-rossiniano. È la fase in cui Verdi, avendo sfruttato a fondo le possibilità dell'estetica e della forma che aveva dato origine a capolavori come "Il Trovatore" o "La Traviata", trova nuovo impulso nel confronto con i grandi maestri dell'opera parigina nei "Vêpres Siciliennes". La varietà del pensiero musicale e la novità della scala spettacolare si faranno sentire nelle opere successive, da "Simon Boccanegra" a "Un balla in Maschera", per culminare nella vasta concezione della "Forza del Destino". Di particolare interesse, a fianco delle analisi dettagliate delle singole opere, sono i capitoli dedicati alle difficoltà che la tradizione musicale italiana stava all'epoca attraversando, e alla maturazione del personale stile verdiano.

›Il trovatore‹ gilt als Inbegriff des romantischen italienischen Gesangstheaters. Schon zu Verdis Lebzeiten war der ›Troubadour‹ eine seiner beliebtesten Opern, die nach der Uraufführung 1853 in Rom rasch auf anderen Bühnen nachgespielt wurde. Aufgrund ihrer ungestümen und kraftvollen Musik erfreut sie sich bis heute großer Beliebtheit. Die neue Textausgabe des von Salvadore Cammarano nach dem Schauspiel ›El trovador‹ von Antonio García Gutiérrez verfassten Librettos folgt dem Druck des zur Uraufführung erschienenen Textes.

Mit seiner dritten Oper „Nabucco“ gelang Verdi der erste große Bühnenerfolg, nachdem er eigentlich das Komponieren aufgeben wollte. Der „Gefangenenchor“, "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" ist wohl jedem Opernliebhaber bekannt und ist eines der ersten Beispiele dafür, dass Verdi die ausdrucksvollsten Melodien einfielen, wenn er Mitleid mit der geknechteten oder erniedrigten Kreatur hatte. Dieses Buch enthält neben dem italienischen Textbuch und der gebräuchlichen deutschen Übersetzung einführende Kommentare von Kurt Pahlen. Er begleitet das musikalische und das äußere wie innere dramatische Geschehen der Oper mit Hinweisen zu kompositorischer Struktur und Sinnzusammenhang. Eine kurze Inhaltsangabe und ein Abriss der Entstehungsgeschichte stellen das Werk in einen Zusammenhang mit dem Gesamtschaffen des Komponisten und seiner Biographie und bieten eine umfassende, reich illustrierte Einführung.

'Don Carlos', 1867 komponiert und uraufgeführt, ist Verdis ehrgeizigstes und umfangreichstes Projekt. Aus Schillers historisch angelegtem Drama schuf Verdi - durch profiliertere Charaktere, eine veränderte Szenenfolge und ergänzende Handlungsmomente - ein musikalisches Tableau elementarer, tiefer menschlicher Grundzüge. Die Ausgabe bietet die heute am meisten gespielte fünfaktige Fassung ohne Ballett.

Mit dem Genueser Dogen Simon Boccanegra schuf Verdi eine seiner markantesten und nuancenreichsten Helden überhaupt. In dessen Streben um die politische Einheit Italiens sah Verdi Fragen seiner eigenen Gegenwart vorweggenommen. - Die Ausgabe folgt der Partitur der überarbeiteten Mailänder Fassung (1881), die Grundlage heutiger Aufführungen ist. Einem lukrativen Auftrag der St. Petersburger Oper folgend, schuf Verdi das vieraktige Werk um romantisch-dramatische Beziehungsverwicklungen. Für die Erstaufführung an der Mailänder Scala änderte der Komponist die Fassung u. a. durch eine erweiterte Ouvertüre und einen versöhnlicheren Schluss. Die Ausgabe folgt dem Mailänder Libretto, der Anhang gibt zudem das Finale der ersten Fassung wieder.
