  Pyrre nemá ráda, když se jí říká Lebka. To slovo nevystihuje krásu její oddanosti Ananshaelovi, bohu smrti. Navíc není nájemný vrah, jak se o Ananshaelových služebnících často tvrdí, nýbrž kněžka. Přesněji řečeno bude, pokud obstojí u závěrečné zkoušky. Problém není v zabíjení – Pyrre strávila celý život tím, že trénovala umění smrti. Problém je láska. Pyrre má čtrnáct dní na to, aby zabila sedm lidí podle prastaré písně, a jedním z těch lidí musí být její opravdová láska. Jenže ona se dosud nikdy nezamilovala, a jestli selže, bude odevzdána svému bohu. Smrti se možná nebojí, ale selhání ano. A tak jí nezbývá, než se vrátit do svého rodného města – města na pokraji revoluce, kde ve stínech číhají zapomenutí staří bohové a žádají si krev – k minulosti, kterou zavrhla, v naději, že tu najde lásku… a ukončí ji ostřím svého nože.
