   De Bijbel is een fascinerend boek. Onze cultuur is ondenkbaar zonder het heilige boek van de joden en de christenen. Maar wie niet gelovig is, leest het niet. En dat is jammer, want het bevat een aantal van de allermooiste verhalen uit de wereldliteratuur. Guus Kuijer vertelt ze na voor ongelovigen (en gelovigen). In dit deel Exodus tot en met Rechters. Dit zijn de Bijbelboeken waarin wordt verteld hoe het volk van Israël uit Egypte wegvlucht en in Kanaän terechtkomt, en dat land koloniseert. Mozes is de eerste leider. Met hem zwerft het joodse volk veertig jaar door de woestijn. Hij brengt het tot aan de grens van het Beloofde Land, het land van melk en honing. Daar neemt Jozua het over, die de veroveringsstrijd gaat leiden, met als bekendste wapenfeit de val van Jericho. Na Jozua komen de rechters, waarvan Simson misschien wel de beroemdste is. Eén thema is steeds aanwezig: de Israëlieten worden telkens opnieuw verleid door vreemde volken en hun goden, terwijl ze toch vooral recht in de leer moeten blijven.
