    Dahl fu un bambino buono, attaccatissimo alla sua mamma, cui scrisse una lettera alla settimana. Fu un bambino ingenuo e credulone, sia quando gli raccontarono che la liquirizia era fatta di sangue di topo pressato che quando gli dissero che ci si poteva ammalare di appendicite inghiottendo un pelo di spazzolino da denti. L'unico dispetto lo fece alle spalle di un'orrenda venditrice di dolci, una specie di Sporcella: le mise un topo morto in un barattolo di caramelle e per questo venne picchiato la prima volta. I ricordi d'infanzia di Dahl sono costellati da continue frustate e da terribili prepotenze sui bambini da parte degli adulti. No, Dahl non ha avuto bisogno d'inventare i giganti crudeli, né la Spezzindue, né la nonna maligna della Magica Medicina, che è mite se confrontata alla sadica venditrice di dolci. Dahl ci avverte di non credere ai cattivi delle fiabe, e ci fornisce i mezzi per smascherare i cattivi della vita.
