By focusing on how figures in fictional texts interact with their environment and deal with the consequences of climate change, this volume foregrounds the broader social and cultural function of apocalyptic narratives of climate change. By evoking a sense of collective human destiny in the face of the ultimate catastrophe, apocalyptic narratives have both cautionary and inspirational functions. Determining the extent to which such narratives square with scientific knowledge of climate change is one of the main aims of this book.

Es handelt sich um die vierte und voraussichtlich letzte Ringvorlesung einer Serie, die mit dem Thema „Das 18. Jahrhundert“ begann und sich über die „Romantik“ und das „Fin de Siècle“ fortsetzte. Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes erfassen interdisziplinär das Spektrum der verschiedenen Entwürfe von Moderne und Postmoderne und thematisieren auch Entwicklungen wie die Postavantgarde, die Ethikdiskussion und die mediale Postmoderne in der virtuellen Welt globaler Netzwerke. Die Literaturwissenschaft dominiert die Sammlung mit romanistischen, germanistischen und anglistischen Aufsätzen, während auch die lateinamerikanische Literatur einbezogen wird. Diese literaturwissenschaftliche Perspektive wird durch Philosophie und Medienwissenschaften ergänzt, um eine geschlossene Sicht auf postmoderne Fragestellungen zu ermöglichen. Der Band gliedert sich in drei Abschnitte: Der erste skizziert den Eintritt in die Moderne und zeichnet Antizipationen der Postmoderne nach. Der zweite Abschnitt thematisiert die Heterogenität der Postmoderne und die Vielfalt der Schreib- und Erzählstile. Im dritten Abschnitt wird der Einfluss neuer Medien, insbesondere des Internets und der Hyperfictions, auf das Erzählen in der Postmoderne beleuchtet.
