Una delle difficoltà nella stesura della Biografia intellettuale di un filosofo si presenta nel tentativo di sistematizzare ciò che, per definizione, è in divenire: il pensiero. Quando però si cerca di ricostruirne l'evoluzione, nei suoi nodi teoretici frequentati per una vita, il modello biografico pare venir meno. È il paradosso del pensiero il cui movimento, in Ludwig Feuerbach (1804-1872) come perlopiù nelle menti speculative, si dà nel costante interrogarsi su un unico problema, nel suo caso sul rapporto filosofia/religione: un confronto di lungo periodo, che si dipana sotto il segno di vita, morte e immortalità; essenza, storia ed esistenza; individualità e empiria; uomo, natura e naturalismo. Temi, affrontati nei capitoli del volume, che prendono sul serio una problematica - l'essenza del cristianesimo - e ne diventano punti di osservazione, secondo un modello ermeneutico auspicato da Feuerbach medesimo, che fa del domandare l'essenza stessa della filosofia. Questa biografia riesce da una parte a restituire un volto complessivo di Feuerbach, con ampi riferimenti a lettere, scritti del periodo giovanile e inediti - risultato di uno studio più che trentennale e della consultazione del Nachlass -; dall'altra a metterne in discussione i punti teoretici più critici e le opinioni dominanti. This book shows a Feuerbach who criticized the unscrupulous technological manipulation of nature, colonialist and racist ideologies, the faith in science shown by positivist and evolutionist theories but who on the other hand upgraded so-called primitive thinking as well as the strictly scientific approach which is aware of its limitations.
