Eugenio Onegin

One of the many aspects of Alexander Pushkin's immense contribution to Russian language and literature, and perhaps the one he is most popular for, is his mastery of the love poem, a genre which he perfected like few others before or after him. This volume contains a selection of his most famous and enduring verse explorations of love, such as 'I Loved You', 'Night' and 'I Well Recall a Wondrous Meeting', pieces which are crowning achievements of the European canon and still have the same timeless emotional resonance today.

The archetypal Romantic, killed in a duel in 1837 at the age of 37, Alexander Pushkin was effectively the founder of modern Russian literature. Though famous as a poet, he was equally at home in prose, and this volume includes all his short fiction, as well as unfinished sketches and fragments. Here of course are his masterpieces, 'The Queen of Spades', Pushkin's ironic take on both the supernatural and the society tale, the terse, deadpan Tales of Belkin, often humorous yet imbued with deep understanding of human nature, and his unsurpassable novella, The Captain's Daughter, which, informed by his meticulous research into the Pugachev Rebellion against Catherine the Great, is a perfect combination of folk epic, historical narrative and romance. Other works include the richly comic 'A History of the Village of Goriukhino', the imaginative historical fiction 'The Moor of Peter the Great' (based on the life of the author's own great-grandfather. Pushkin was particularly proud of his African ancestry), and 'Journey to Arzrum', the fascinating autobiographical account of his (unauthorized, and greatly displeasing to the Tsar) travels in the Caucasus at the time of the 1828-9 Russo-Turkish war.

"In an era of inept and ignorant imitations, whose piped-in background music has hypnotized innocent readers into fearing literality's salutary jolt, some reviewers were upset by the humble fidelity of my version." Such was Vladimir Nabokov's response to the storm of controversy aroused by the first edition of his literal translation of "Eugene Onegin." This bold rendering of the Russian masterpiece, together with Nabokov's detailed and witty commentary, is itself a work of enduring literary interest, and reflects a lifelong admiration for Pushkin on the part of one of this century's most brilliant stylists.

  • The award-winning translators bring us the complete plays of the most acclaimed Russian writer of the Romantic era.Known as the father of Russian literature, Alexander Pushkin was celebrated for his dramas as well as his poetry and stories. His most famous play is Boris Godunov (later adapted into a popular opera by Mussorgsky), a tale of ambition and murder centered on the sixteenth-century Tsar who preceded the Romanovs. Pushkin was inspired by the example of Shakespeare to create this panoramic drama, with its richly varied cast of characters and artful blend of comic and tragic scenes. Pushkin’s shorter forays into verse drama include The Water Nymph , A Scene from Faust , and the four brief plays known as the Little Tragedies : The Miserly Knight , set in medieval France; Mozart and Salieri , which inspired the popular film Amadeus ; The Stone Guest , a tale of Don Juan in Madrid; and A Feast in a Time of Plague , in which a group of revelers defy quarantine in plague-ridden London. These new translations of the complete plays, from the award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, freshly reveal the range of Pushkin’s enduring artistry.

In "The Stationmaster", Pushkin reimagines the parable of the Prodigal Son; "Tsar Nikita and His Forty Daughters" showcases some of his more provocative early poetry; and the narrative poem "The Bronze Horseman", inspired by a statue of Peter the Great, is one of Pushkin’s most celebrated works. One of Pushkin’s most thrilling prose works, Dubrovsky follows the adventures of an aristocrat-turned-brigand and his audacious scheme for revenge. It is published here with the short story Egyptian Nights. Dubrovsky is the son of a landowner whose property has been confiscated by a corrupt and malicious general. After his father dies, and his faithful servants burn his ancestral home to the ground, Dubrovsky turns to crime. But to achieve his ultimate aim of avenging his father, he must resort to subtler means than banditry. Masquerading as a French tutor, he enters the General’s house and sets about beguiling his daughter. Asking hard questions of our faith in social institutions, in particular the law, Dubrovsky displays the considerable storytelling skill of Russia’s greatest poet. Alexander Pushkin wrote lyric and narrative poems, but his masterwork is the verse novel Eugene Onegin.

  • Bélkin's stories are among the finest works of prose by Pushkin, although the author presents himself to readers in the preface as merely the editor of a found manuscript by the deceased Ivan Petrovich Bélkin. This framing transforms the collection from a work of literary authority into a testimony from an otherwise unknown individual about the world and life within it. This allows Pushkin to place uniquely ordinary characters at the center of the narrative, who later became an inspiration for the entirety of modern Russian literature.

  • This volume contains new translations of four of Pushkin's best works of fiction. The Queen of Spades has long been acknowledged as one of the world's greatest short stories, in which Pushkin explores the nature of obsession. The Tales of Belkin are witty parodies of sentimentalism, while Peter the Great's Blackamoor is an early experiment with recreating the past. The Captain's Daughter is a novel-length masterpiece which combines historical fiction in the manner of Sir Walter Scott with the devices of the Russian fairy-tale. The Introduction provides close readings of the stories and places them in their European literary context.

Eugene Onegin is the master work of the poet whom Russians regard as the fountainhead of their literature. Set in 1820s Russia, Pushkin's novel in verse follows the fates of three men and three women. It was Pushkin's own favourite work, and this new translation conveys the literal sense and the poetic music of the original. - ;Eugene Onegin is the master work of the poet whom Russians regard as the fountainhead of their literature. Set in 1820s imperial Russia, Pushkin's novel in verse follows the emotions and destiny of three men - Onegin the bored fop, Lensky the minor elegiast, and a stylized Pushkin himself - and the fates and affections of three women - Tatyana the provincial beauty, her sister Olga, and Pushkin's mercurial Muse. Engaging, full of suspense, and varied in tone, it also portrays a large cast of other characters and offers the reader many literary, philosophical, and autobiographical digressions, often in a highly satirical vein. Eugene Onegin was Pushkin's own favourite work, and it shows him attempting to transform himself from a romantic poet into a realistic novelist. This new translation seeks to retain both the literal sense and the poetic music of the original, and capture the poem's spontaneity and wit. The introduction examines several ways of reading the novel, and text is richly annotated. -

  • A versregény főhőse a kor nemesi intelligenciájának alaptípusa, elégedetlenséget érző, de döntésre és ellenállásra képtelen ifjú, a „felesleges ember”, aki kora társadalmától és a néptől egyaránt távol áll, s a kibontakozás útját nem találva egykedvű, életunt. Anyegin figuráján keresztül nemcsak Puskin két száműzetésének, majd a fővárosba való visszatérésének élményei épülnek a műbe, hanem a szerelem, párbaj, bál és színház motívumok hangsúlyos szerepével voltaképpen saját életformáját örökíti meg a kiábrándult dekadencia atmoszférájában. A mű – polifonikus kompozíciója révén – egyúttal hű és tárgyilagos képet rajzol a kor Oroszországának életéről, nemcsak a főváros, hanem a falvak és az udvarházak hangulatát is híven tükrözi. S bár közvetlen politikai vonatkozásai nincsenek, a sorok mögé bújva érezhető feszültséget teremt a forradalom szükségességének vágya.

  • Alexander Puschkin will heiraten.
