    Johann Joachim Winckelmann fu uno storico dell'arte e archeologo pioniere che articolò le distinzioni tra arte greca, greco-romana e romana. La sua applicazione sistematica delle categorie di stile alla storia dell'arte pose le basi per l'archeologia scientifica e la disciplina stessa della storia dell'arte, diventando una figura fondamentale del campo. La profonda influenza di Winckelmann sul movimento neoclassico e sulla pittura, scultura, letteratura e filosofia occidentale fu così significativa da essere provocatoriamente definita 'la Tirannia della Grecia sulla Germania'. Il suo lavoro continua a plasmare la nostra comprensione del mondo antico e della sua eredità artistica.

      Der vorliegende Textband (SN 6,1) wird ergänzt werden durch einen Sachkommentar (SN 6,2) und einen weiteren Band (SN 6,3), der verschiedene handschriftliche Entwürfe – auch zu einem dritten Band der Monumenti inediti – aus dem Nachlass enthält sowie weitere Materialien zum Werk. Im Kommentarband wird zu jedem Abschnitt des Textes eine historische deutsche Übersetzung geboten: für den Trattato preliminare die Übersetzung aus der Weimarer Edition von 1817, für den übrigen Text die Übersetzung von Friedrich Leopold Brunn von 1791/92. Als Förderer unserer Edition ist an die Stelle der Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt jetzt das Deutsche Archäologische Institut getreten, das in früheren Jahren bereits die grundlegenden Ausgaben der Briefe sowie der Kleinen Schriften Winckelmanns unterstützt hat. Unser Dank gilt der Zentraldirektion und dem Präsidenten des Instituts.

      This new translation brings to light the early days of scientific archaeology and the unearthing and study of Herculaneum and Pompeii as observed by the erudite and acerbic art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768). His Letter, published in German in 1762, displays his extensive knowledge of geology, ancient literature, and art while offering a scathing critique of the Spanish Bourbon excavations around the Bay of Naples and of the officials involved. He further discusses these topics in his equally controversial Report of 1764. The introduction describes the context in which these texts were written, identifies various politicians, academics, and collectors, and elucidates topics of particular interest to Winckelmann, from artifacts to local customs to the contents of ancient papyri. The illustrations, particularly those from the Bourbon publication--Le Antichità di Ercolano (1757-92)--illuminate how these monuments influenced contemporary perception of the ancient world.
