Thomas Bateman (1778-1821) zählt zu den Pionieren der Dermatologie. Er studierte Medizin in London und Edinburgh und erhielt seine Approbation 1801. In London setzte er seine Ausbildung bei dem Hautarzt Robert Willan fort - gemeinsam arbeiteten die Mediziner an der Beschreibung und Klassifikation von Hauterkrankungen vom anatomischen Standpunkt aus. So beschrieben sie das klinische Erscheinungsbild der Schuppenflechte zwar bereits 1809 präzise, die Krankheit jedoch klassifizierten als Psora leprosa und Lepra graecorum. Bateman setzte die Arbeit Willans nach dessen Tod im Jahre 1812 fort und fasste die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungen in dem Band „A Practical Synopsis of Cutaneous Diseases, According to the arrangement of Dr. Willan“ (1813) (dt. „Praktische Darstellung der Hautkrankheiten nach Willan´s System“ (1815)) zusammen. Dieser Band wurde zu einem der einflussreichsten dermatologischen Werke im 19. Jahrhundert. Bateman starb im Alter von lediglich 42 Jahren.
