« Understanding todays' Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems requires a comprehension of the rise and development, i.e. of the foundations of topical VET. Die Studie beleuchtet eine bislang in der schweizerischen Geschichtsschreibung vernachlässigte Phase der Entwicklung von Schule und pädagogischem Denken. Die Autorin arbeitet die Zustände im Landschulwesen des reformierten Stadtstaates Zürich im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert heraus, gibt Einblicke in zeitgenössische Problemwahrnehmungen zu Unterricht und Erziehung sowie in Motive und Kontexte eines in den 1770er Jahren erfolgten lokalen Reformprojektes. Dabei wird ein religiös-theologischer Diskurs freigelegt, der auf zwei dialektische Tendenzen verweist: Zum einen lassen sich volkserzieherische Bestrebungen mit dem Ziel einer Rechristianisierung feststellen, zum anderen aber auch deutliche Züge einer Moralisierung, Pädagogisierung und schließlich Profanierung der Gesellschaft.
