Berlin – Center for International Artists “Portfolio Berlin 03” reveals contrasts and commonalities in contemporary art positions. It presents artists living in Berlin as Yael Bartana, Christian Falsnaes, Klara Lidén, and others. While painting was the focus of “Portfolio Berlin 01,” and sculpture und installation the focus of “Portfolio 02,” the third publication shows video, performance, and photography. Nach dem Fall der Mauer hat Berlin einen einzigartigen Aufschwung als Metropole zeitgenössischer Kunst erlebt. Zwanzig Jahre danach ist Berlin zum Schmelztiegel verschiedenster kultureller Einflüsse und zum Hauptquartier global operierender Museen und Kunsthäuser, Galeristen und Künstler geworden. Während im vorhergehenden Buch „Portfolio Berlin 01“ die Malerei im Mittelpunkt stand, verlagert sich in der zweiten Ausgabe der Schwerpunkt in Richtung Skulptur und Installation. „Portfolio Berlin 02“ zeigt sieben wichtige Positionen von international agierenden Künstlern, die in Berlin leben und arbeiten: Monica Bonvicini, Björn Dahlem, Olafur Eliasson, Alicja Kwade, Via Lewandowsky, Bettina Pousttchi und Michael Sailstorfer. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die ausgewählten Künstler auch im bildhauerischen Bereich gattungsübergreifend denken, Grenzen verschieben und tradierte Bedeutungszusammenhänge aufbrechen. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the East German regime's boundaries, Berlin experienced an unprecedented upsurge as a center for contemporary art. Meanwhile, there is no other European city where more artists are living and working than in Berlin. It is thus no surprise that works are created here that cut across classical categories and place special emphasis on dialogue and intercontextual qualities. The exhibition at the Kunsthalle Rostock will show Berlin artists who have received an increased public exposure during the past decade and whose work addresses the interface between painting and other media.
