Meteorologies of Modernity examines how literature engages with discourses on weather and climate throughout history and in contemporary society. It reveals a rich meteorological archive within literature, prompting inquiries into how it can illuminate the complexities of climate change. The essays explore literature's capacity to address the challenges of the Anthropocene culturally, historically, and aesthetically, ultimately reshaping our understanding of humanity. Thirteen contributions from literary and cultural studies offer diverse conceptual perspectives on weather and climate, spanning various historical and geographical contexts. Topics include Shakespeare's representations of tropical climates, the intricate relationship between literature and the emerging field of meteorology in the nineteenth century, postcolonial allegories of climate change, and contemporary climate catastrophes in cli-fi novels. By adopting a historicizing and comparative approach, the volume emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary, transnational, and transhistorical studies of climate representations. It seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and foster new theoretical and critical collectives essential for engaging with the Anthropocene.
