This text offers a combination of archaeology and history to tell the story of the Apalachee Indians of northwest Florida and their Spanish conquerors. The book portrays the dwellings, daily life, religious practices, social structures and recreation activities of the mission.

Dating back to the sixteenth century, Lisburn is one of the ancient towns of Co. Down. This collection of fifty-three rare period images recalls the town as it was at the turn of the twentieth century and they feature shops, markets and the life of the town in the years up to 1950. Also documented are the many drastic changes to the town's architecture over the years. Other subjects include the Lisburn Riots of 1920 and the history of the famous Friends' School.

Larne and its surrounding area is one of the earliest inhabited regions in Ireland and its early history was marked by a series of conflicts including invasions by the Vikings and the Scots and the 1641 Rebellion. However, the town's fortunes improved with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution and from the mid-nineteenth century the harbour became a lynchpin of the local economy as a source of tourism and trade. This history of the town contains over 50 photographs from the early years of the twentieth century, a time when the town still basked in this economic boom. Many of Larne's expansive hotels are shown, as well as subjects such as the railway station, the steamers that plied their trade at the harbour, local streets and schools, the long-gone swimming stages at the Banks, and the nearby villages of Inver and Glenoe.

Bangor, Co. Down, was always Northern Ireland's favourite holiday destination and in this history of the town its heyday as a resort, the years from 1900 to the Second World War, are recalled in a selection of fifty-three photographs from those years. Shops, streets and buildings from years gone by are all featured and the many scenes include battleships flying the flag off the coast, the charabanc tours at the Esplanade, Market Day, kids paddling at Children's Corner, the Bandstand, the packed beach at Ballyholme Bay, the Belfast steamers arriving at the piers, the 'ladies' bathing place' at Pickie's Rock (of which men were forbidden to come within 100 yards!), a visit by King Edward VII, and Henry Wingfield playing the magnificent organ at the fondly remembered Tonic Cinema

Die theoriegeleitete Recherchestudie, Teil eines größeren Forschungszusammenhangs, fragt nach den Angeboten, welche die soziale Integration der Studierenden mit dem Studienbeginn so verbessern, dass der Studienerfolg (angesichts hoch problematischer Schwundquoten) wahrscheinlicher wird. In Anlehnung an ethnologische und transitionssoziologische Forschungen wird der Übergang Schule – Hochschule als „Statuspassage“ konzipiert. Damit ist diese Passage im Lebenslauf junger Erwachsener eine Entwicklungsaufgabe, die bewältigt werden muss. Was bringen die jungen Menschen an Kompetenzen/Ressourcen mit? Was muss die Hochschule anbieten? Auch moderne „Gesellschaften“ benötigen Formen der „Vergemeinschaftung“. Die Studie wird eingeleitet mit einer ausführlichen Erörterung hochschulstrategischer Perspektiven: Ist die Hochschule im Exzellenzwettbewerb authentisch ein Lern-Lehr-Ort für alle Studierende?
