Diese Studie beleuchtet die Entstehungsgeschichte moderner Gefängnisse auf der japanischen Nordinsel Hokkaido. Anhand japanischer Originalquellen dokumentiert die Autorin die sozial-ökonomischen Funktionen dieser Gefängnisse im Zuge der Kolonialisierung der japanischen Nordinsel. Dabei wird klar, dass die Sträflinge durch landwirtschaftliche Arbeiten, Handwerk, Kohleabbau und Straßenbau zur lokalen und regionalen Entwicklung und somit auch zum Modernisierungsprozess Japans beigetragen haben.
