    Niko Pirosmani
    • Niko Pirosmani is a legendary figure in Georgia, known for his poignant portraits, animal paintings, landscapes, and everyday scenes created around 1900 in Tbilisi. His work, influenced by medieval iconography, reflects a profound sense of belonging while also embodying a novel approach recognized by the avant-garde. Like Henri Rousseau and Marc Chagall, Pirosmani is an exceptional yet hard-to-categorize artist of early modern art. This catalogue showcases his talents through numerous illustrations, highlighting how his rapid brushstrokes on black oilcloth imbue the sparsely applied colors with a luminous quality. A master storyteller, Pirosmani's unique artistry is expertly analyzed by Georgian art historians, revealing his contradictory nature and significance in Tbilisi's vibrant art scene, once dubbed the “Paris of the East.” Born into a peasant family in 1862, he moved to Tbilisi in 1870, where he painted portraits and tavern signs to earn his keep. His work caught the attention of the Georgian and Russian avant-garde in 1912, leading to his presentation as the “Rousseau of the East” at the Moscow exhibition Mischén. Although a planned exhibition in Paris was thwarted by the First World War, Pirosmani's legacy endures, and he is now celebrated as Georgia’s most renowned artist.
