    • Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling begann direkt nach seiner zwischen 1770 und 1772 in Straßburg verbrachten Zeit die »wahrhafte« Geschichte seines Lebens aufzuschreiben, literarisch kostümiert und in der dritten Person gehalten. In Straßburg hatte der aus frommstem Pietismus kommende Jung-Stilling Bekanntschaft mit den Stürmern und Drängern gemacht und dabei nicht zuletzt Herder und Goethe kennengelernt. Dieser ließ den ersten Teil der Autobiographie, »Stillings Jugend«, ohne Wissen des Autors 1777 veröffentlichen. Das Buch mit seinen realistischen Details aus dem dörflichen Leben des Siegerlands wurde zu einem großen Erfolg, Jung-Stilling ›über Nacht‹ berühmt. In den späteren Teilen (»Jünglingsjahre«, »Wanderschaft«, »häusliches Leben«), die zwischen 1778 und 1789 erschienen, rückt zunehmend die Religion in den Mittelpunkt.
