Der vorliegende Band untersucht die Entstehungsgeschichte des modernen Irak seit seiner Unabhängigkeit 1921 bis zur Invasion in Kuwait im Jahre 1990. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei der Zeitraum ab 1958, dem Zeitpunkt, als eine Gruppe von Offizieren die Republik ausrief. 1969 setzte mit der Machtübernahme durch die Bath-Partei eine diktatorische Entwicklung ein, in der von da ab alle Vollmachten sich in den Händen von Saddam Husain konzentrierten.
