This volume addresses the need to revisit the economic theories from the last two decades that have contributed to the development of a concentrated research agenda on nonprofit organizations. Long neglected as a topic of theorizing and empirical investigation by mainstream economics in particular, these initial theories of nonprofit organizations from the late 1970s and early 1980s continue to shape theoretical and conceptual efforts. Importantly, their influence extends beyond economics and informs sociological and politics science approaches to the set of organizations and institutions located between the market firm and the state agency as well. While the theoretical map of nonprofit research has expanded beyond these early attempts and now include several other major theories such as stakeholder approaches, supply-side or entrepreneurial theories, institutional theories and comparative approaches. This work suggests that it is time to take stock and reexamine some of the basics from which these economic theories operate. This work will be essential to those in the nonprofit sector, organizational management and economics, political scientists and other researchers working with the nonprofit and voluntary sector.

Moreover, today's experts in post-communist countries do not find stable policies and institutional arrangements in the West but rather another reform process, the "domestication" of the classical welfare states. Im bisher größten Forschungsprojekt zum deutschen Stiftungswesen wurde erstmals auf Grundlage einer umfangreichen Datenbasis eine Einschätzung der Rollen, Positionierungen und Beiträge deutscher Stiftungen vorgenommen. Der Band führt zunächst in den aktuellen Stand der Stiftungs- und Philanthropieforschung und das Vorgehen der Forschungsgruppe um Helmut K. Anheier ein. Es folgt ein umfassendes empirisches Bild des deutschen Stiftungswesens mit Fokus auf die Bereiche Bildung und Erziehung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, Soziales sowie Kunst und Kultur. Deutschland zeichnet sich durch ein stark gewachsenes und vielfältiges Stiftungswesen aus. Je nach Stiftungstyp üben Stiftungen unterschiedliche Rollen aus und leisten spezifische Beiträge, die jeweils andere Handlungsempfehlungen nahe legen. Der dritte Band der Studie zu „Stiftungen in Deutschland“ stellt diese Vielfalt der deutschen Stiftungslandschaft vor, behandelt typische Stärken und Schwächen verschiedener Stiftungstypen und geht auf ausgewählte Themen wie strategische Philanthropie, Advocacy, Vergleich Stiftungen in Ost- und Westdeutschland sowie Internationales ein. Im bisher größten Forschungsprojekt zum deutschen Stiftungswesen hat ein Forscherteam der Hertie School of Governance und des Centre for Social Investment der Universität Heidelberg um Helmut K. Anheier das deutsche Stiftungswesen systematisch und auf einer breiten empirischen Basis untersucht.

Durch die wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Veränderungen der letzten Jahre, insbesondere auch durch die Reduktion staatlicher Leistungen sind Stiftungen, Wohlfahrts- und Interessenverbände, Bürger- und Umweltinitiativen und andere nicht-staatliche Organisationen verstärkt ins öffentliche Bewußtsein gerückt. In der Diskussion über die Zukunft der modernen Gesellschaft nimmt dieser „Dritte Sektor“ oder „Nonprofit-Sektor“ einen zunehmend wichtigen Platz ein. Trotz der gestiegenen Erwartungen, die diesem zwischen Staat und Markt angesiedelten Bereich entgegengebracht werden, sind empirisch gesicherte Strukturdaten über ihn bislang nur lückenhaft verfügbar. Um diesem Mangel abzuhelfen, wurden in einem international vergleichenden Forschungsprojekt unter Federführung des John Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies erstmals umfassende Daten über Struktur, Ausmaß und Entwicklung des Nonprofit-Sektors erhoben. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zur Bedeutung, Gliederung und Finanzierung dieses Bereichs in Deutschland und im internationalen Vergleich sowie Fragen der künftigen Entwicklung des Dritten Sektors werden in diesem Band vorgestellt und diskutiert.
